A vengeful former husband shot and killed his heavily pregnant ex-wife with a crossbow after their marriage broke down and she left him for another man, a court has heard.
The 35-year-old victim Devi Unmathallegado, suffered "catastrophic" internal injuries from the crossbow bolt, which pierced her heart, Old Bailey jurors were told.
Medics were unable to save the woman, but her baby was delivered by emergency caesarean section and survived following the attack in the family home in Ilford, east London.
In November last year, defendant Ramanodge Unmathallegado armed himself with two crossbows and entered the home and shot his former wife as she tried to get away, it is alleged.
Prosecutors claimed he also intended to kill her new partner, Imtiaz Muhammad.
The 51-year-old had allegedly been preparing the attack on the couple for at least a year, storing weapons and equipment nearby.
On the morning of the killing he hid in a shed, awaiting the moment to strike with two loaded crossbows, arrows, a hammer, knife, cable ties, duct tape and scissors, the court heard.
