Uber driver fired for forcing lesbian couple out of car because they were gay
An Uber driver has been fired after she kicked two women out of her car for being gay, the rideshare company said.
Kristen Michele filmed the homophobic encounter that occurred on Friday as she and Jenn Mangan were on their way to a concert in Camden, New Jersey.
According to the couple, the unnamed driver demanded they get out of her car after Michele gave Mangan a kiss on the cheek.
In the footage, Michele asks the driver if she is kicking them out because they are gay and the driver responds Yes, I am. Yes. Get out.
Michele said she began filming after the driver said she was a Christian woman and didnt believe in that (homosexuality).
Youve gotta be fucking kidding me. It is 2019 (and) youre kicking me out because Im gay, Michele says as the driver adamantly orders them to leave.
The driver then told the women that she can reject any ride that I want to.
Uber said that the driver was incorrect. According to their website, the company has clear non-discrimination policies.
After they were made to leave, Michele said that she and Mangan had to walk about half of a mile home before taking a train to the concert.
On Sunday, the rideshare company confirmed that the woman no longer works for them.
Uber spokesman Grant Klinzman said: Uber does not tolerate discrimination in any form and we have been in contact with this rider. We removed the drivers access to the app as soon as we were made aware of this incident, NJ.com reported.
