Grandmother spared jail after killing friend while reversing out of parking space
A grandmother killed a close friend after dragging her under a car while she was reversing out of a parking space, a court heard.
Carol White, 73, lost control of her Subaru Impreza while Barbara Calligan, 62, was guiding her out of the space, after the pair had been to an art class together.
Shocking CCTV footage showed Whites car suddenly shoot backwards out of the space, ploughing into Mrs Calligan before surging forwards and dragging her underneath the vehicle.
Mother-of-two and retired headteacher, Mrs Calligan, later died of her injuries.
White, of Monmouthshire, Wales, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving at Cardiff Crown Court.
She was jailed for 16 months suspended for one year.
The court was told how local butcher Gareth Beaven watched the tragedy unfold.
Prosecutor Jason Howells, said: Mr Beaven said he heard an engine revving before the Subaru went up the two foot wall with two wheels on the wall.
He then heard the engine rev again before the car surged forward hitting Mrs Calligan and dragging her under the car.
Mr Beaven said Whites face was expressionless and emotionless.
It was heard how former florist White surrendered her driving licence just days after the tragedy in March.
Jeff Jones, defending, admitted Whites driving was strange and exceptional and said she was remorseful over the incident.
He added: An early onset of dementia is likely to have contributed to this offence.
It is a lapse of a moments that has caused this crime, this tragedy.
She relinquished her driving license days after the incident and she does have great remorse and upset about what has happened.
Recorder of Cardiff, Eleri Rees QC ,said: You were very good friends and attended the same art class.
