You can get a holiday home for just €1, but theres a catch
A town in southern Sicily is selling homes online for just just €1 each (85p).
The town hopes the bargain offer will help boost its population as people leave for Italys cities in their droves.
The homes are small but have multiple bedrooms and offer idyllic views, but before you whip out the bank card theres a slight catch to the cut-price offer.
The local government in Mussomeli says anyone who buys one of the houses has three years to renovate it or theyll lose their £4,270 deposit.
Restoration costs are estimated at £81 per square foot, on top of admin fees between £2,135 and £3,443.
Engineers will be on hand to help out with work but buyers can still get help from outside the town if theyd prefer, according to MailOnline.
So far 100 of the houses have been put up for sale online and another 400 are expected to follow.
The homes range between 215 and 2,045 square feet, meaning renovation costs could range between £17,415 and £165,645.
The scheme is part of efforts to bolster the towns population, which fell from 11,526 to 10,711 between 2012 and 2017.
As people leave the Italian countryside for cities, local authorities in rural areas have been forced to sell off homes for rock bottom prices.
According to a 2016 report by environmental association Legambiente, nearly 2,500 rural Italian towns faced serious population decline and even extinction.
Mussomeli is known for its vineyards, wheat fields, fig trees and cattle and sheep farms used to make cheeses.
But more and more people have been ditching slow paced country life in search of more job opportunities in bigger cities abroad and elsewhere in Italy.
Italys youth unemployment rate is now the second highest in the Eurozone after Greece, reaching 33 per cent in January.
According to statistics institute ISTAT unemployment rates are much higher in the south of the country including Sicily.
