Christmas Eve is set to be one of the wettest ever and flood warnings have been issued for Scotland.

Any hopes of a White Christmas in the UK have melted away as The Met Office forecast windy, cloudy and rainy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

A Met Office spokesman said: ‘For many in the UK Saturday will be cloudy but mild.

‘The best of any sunshine in the northeast, but damp conditions in western areas with mist and drizzle. Strong winds in the north and generally breezy elsewhere.’

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: ‘Christmas Eve will be blustery for most with 50mph gusts in the West and North.

‘Christmas Day will be mild, but heavy rain in northern England and southern Scotland has the chance of snow, with a rain band moving across the rest of the UK later in the day.’

However, a deluge of rain is set to hit Scotland from tonight and a yellow rain warning has been issued.

The Met Office warning said: ‘Heavy rain is likely over parts of western Scotland over the weekend. The heaviest and most persistent rain is likely across western Scotland during Sunday.

‘Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer. This will probably also cause delays to bus and train services. There is a chance that a few homes and businesses could be flooded.’

The highest rainfall totals could reach 100mm and parts of Northern England and Northern Ireland will also be hit by rain.

Temperatures will be mild compared to the last few weekends and for December, the maximum temperatures will reach 10-13C.
