But she has now appeared in court accused of stabbing the 52-year-old to death at home in Penywaun, Aberdare, on Sunday night.

South Wales Police said an investigation is being carried out by its major crime investigations team and confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the alleged murder.

A spokesman said: ‘We were called to an address in Penywaun, Aberdare, at 9.30pm on Sunday evening.

‘An investigation into the death of Neil Jex is being carried out by the South Wales Police Major Crime Investigations Team.

‘We have charged a 31-year-old woman with murder following the death of a Mr Jex.’

Mr Jex’s family said: ‘We as a family are completely devastated, we have lost a brother, son, father, grandfather and friend.

‘He adored his family and once you met him you would very rarely forget him, his legacy will live on through his grandson, who will never have the opportunity to love him as much as we did.’

The dad-of-three was reportedly found in a pool of blood by officers after a 999 call to the couple’s home.

It is understood the pair had been out with friends for a boozy Christmas lunch earlier in the day.

Neighbours said the couple’s children were in the house at the time of the tragedy.

A neighbour said: ‘They had been out for the day and had just got back when something went wrong.

‘An ambulance was here in minutes but they could not save him.

‘The street was full of police car and ambulances.

‘No one can understand it, they were good together and always seemed happy.

‘It’s tragic for both of them.’

Neil recently became a grandfather after his daughter from his first marriage gave birth to a little boy.

Neil was a proud stepdad to Natasha’s 14-year-old son and the couple had a baby boy of their own two years ago.

Another neighbour said: ‘They loved that little boy more than anything – now he’s lost his dad in the blink of an eye.

‘It is too tragic for words at this time of year.’

Natasha Smith, aged 31, appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates Court yesterday.
