Terrell Decosta Jones-Burton was riding his bike on Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, when he was approached by officers, who were responding to reports of a robbery, at around 9pm yesterday.

Met Police said the teenager came off his bike while they were trying to detain him but the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is now looking into the matter after the force made a mandatory referral.

‘While being detained, the male came off his bicycle and was taken by the London Ambulance Service to a south London hospital where he remains in a stable condition with facial injuries,’ a police spokesperson said.

Terrell’s mother Shereen Jones has since posted images of his injuries, which she said included a broken jawbone and bleeding on the brain, on social media with the hashtag #JusticeForTerrell.

He was pictured in hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

‘Was all of this necessary over a phone? Police brutality on young black boys has to stop,’ she wrote in a post on Facebook.

She said Terrell was not a ‘thug’ and was heading home when he was stopped by police.

Ms Jones added: ‘He has no criminal record and no involvement with the police.’
