Theresa May has probably got used to getting hit from all angles in her short time as Prime Minister.
But it hasn’t been quite so literal as it was last night at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet.
It was one of Westminster’s most lavish nights of the year as politicians and dignitaries gathered at the City of London’s Guildhall.
As the procession got underway, Mrs May showed her lightning reactions when the ceremonial mace threatened to knock her out in front of everyone.
To be fair to the Lord Mayor’s mace bearer, the PM was never under any real threat.
But it didn’t stop Mrs May jumping out of her skin as the golden mace swung down to rest on the bearer’s shoulder, a safe distance away from the Prime Minister’s cranium.
It isn’t the first time Mrs May has had a ceremonial close shave.
Black Rod’s staff threatened to poke her eye out in Parliament after the election in June.
She quickly backed off and shared an awkward giggle with her right man Damian Green.
Mrs May isn’t alone when it comes to near misses.
The Queen was nearly caught by the Lord Mayor’s blade as he spun around before Margaret Thatcher’s funeral.
Fortunately for Roger Clifford, the Queen dodged it and an international incident was avoided.
