Here’s why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement isn’t a surprise
After weeks of speculation in countless tabloid magazines, it has finally been confirmed — Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle are engaged.
So what were the signs a Royal engagement was imminent?
A couple of things sparked the rumours
The first was Markle reportedly packing up her house in Toronto and moving to Nottingham Cottage, where Prince Harry currently resides.
The house is in the grounds of Kensington Palace.
The next was Markle and Prince Harry sharing tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and some say it was for the Prince to seek her blessing for an engagement.
And there were rumours Markle quit her lead role in the television series Suits.
This followed confirmation of their relationship in September at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto.
Are there similarities to Prince William and Kate's engagement?
Prince William proposed to Kate on a holiday in Kenya, and made an official announcement one month later.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took a trip to South Africa back in August, and there was speculation that's when he popped the question.
However, Kensington Palace said in an announcement the couple got engaged in London earlier this month.
So what happened with Prince William and Kate when they made the announcement?
The pair were under constant scrutiny during their almost decade-long courtship.
They first met in 2001 when they began their studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where they both studied art history, and became an item in 2003.
Their relationship was revealed after the pair went on a skiing trip in 2004.
They had a brief split in 2007, before reuniting in the same year.
Clarence House — a royal residence in London — made the official announcement on November 16, 2010.
It stated they would be married in the Spring or Summer of 2011 in London.
The pair held a photo call at St James's Palace that afternoon.
So, will the same protocol be followed for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
There doesn't seem to be a strict protocol for announcements.
Prince Charles and Diana kept their engagement a secret for a number of weeks before making an announcement on February 24, 1981.
But it was Buckingham Palace that made the announcement.
Prince Charles made the announcement about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
What happens now?
The couple will take part in a broadcast interview tonight, UK time.
They will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
